Sparkling aperitiffs
Throughout history it was the women that stood for making good stuff from fruit and berries in our villages and made the fruit last over the winter.
If we read dignified Mrs. Henriette Schønberg Erken's "Lage cookbook for larger and smaller households" from 1914, we find several examples of "making fruit wine".
This was the inspiration when Balholm was going to develop new drinks from fruit and berries.
Emma
Fruit wine from apple and gooseberry 75 cl, 8% vol. Emma Normann (1871 – 1954) is the painter who was born in Düsseldorf in Germany and was the daughter of the famous painter Eilert Adelsten Normann. He was also her teacher. Emma painted in the style of the time - neo romanticism, and with beautiful landscape especially from Balestrand as her family had a summer house in the village - one of the houses in the dragon style. She built her own house – Villa Heimdalsstrand – that now is protected by the county council as a well preserved example of an artist housing in Balestrand. Deveolped from Norwegian tradition. Fresh and dry. Is suitable as an aperitiff, but also with light dishes like fish and white meat. Should be served cooled. Vinmonopolet nr. 6861201 Taste: Pure, creamy, nice mouse, good freshness with a taste of gooseberry. Smell: Aroma with a mark of fresh apple, herbs and gooseberry. Color: Bright golden. |
Ingeborg
Fruit wine from apple and plum 75 cl, 8% vol. Ingeborg is a character known from the Icelandic saga of "Fridtjov the brave". The Swedish poet Esaias Tegnér made the saga immortal in 1825 through his cycle of poems in 24 verses, and painters has through their travels and descriptions of the landscape put the area in mid-Sogn - Balestrand, Leikanger and Framnes (Vangsnes) on the map. The saga was also translated by Ivar Aasen in 1858 as the first saga text in "nynorsk"! Ingeborg was a motif for many famous painters in the 1800s, and their paintings started a wave of travelers who came to Balestrand throughout the century. Deveolped from Norwegian tradition. Fresh and dry. Is suitable as an aperitiff, but also with light dishes like fish and white meat. Should be served cooled. Margaret (non-alcohol)
Fruit juice from apple and rhubarb 75 cl Margaret Sophie Green Kvikne (1850 – 1894) is the priest's daughter and the pioner in mountain climbing who came from England to climb in Jotunheimen. She must have been one of the toughest women who put her feet in Sogn, and has left deep trails in Norwegian mountain history. She was among other things, the first women who climbed to the top of "Store Styggedalstind" (1888). She married hotel owner Knut Kvikne in 1890. Unfortunately they had a short life together as she died from tuberkuloses only a few years later. Knut, together with other strong women in the village, built St Olaf's Church in her memory (1897). Deveolped from Norwegian tradition. Fresh and dry. Is suitable as an aperitiff, but also with light dishes like fish and white meat. Should be served cooled. |
